As a straight, relatively conservative Christian, who was raised to believe that homosexuality is a sin, and that God created marriage to be between a man and a woman, it may seem strange to some people that I am 100% in support of this! Why? Because, as a Christian, I view marriage as a religious institution, and as an identifying Libertarian, I believe staunchly in the separation of church and state.
That said, I would, without hesitation, vote against legalizing gay marriage. I am not against gay marriage because of my religious beliefs, but because of my political beliefs. In my opinion, the government should have less than no say in what constitutes ANY marriage, gay or straight. I find the fact that our corrupt government requires committing couples to apply for a marriage license to be insulting, and grossly unromantic!
I do not need a piece of paper from the government to legitimize my hypothetical future mutual life-long monogamous commitment, made before God, family and friends, to love, honor and cherish Mr. Right through good and bad. It is the covenant between God and each other that makes it a marriage, NOT a piece of paper giving us legal permission, or recognizing it by the government! I would personally prefer to celebrate my MARRIAGE with a church wedding, and then file domestic partnership papers with the government in a completely separate, unromantic incidence... Like renewing my driver’s license at the DMV…
I am not even going to touch on what The Bible says, or what I believe… that is irrelevant, because we are blessed to live in a society that affords us the freedom to choose our own religion. Any views I form based solely on my religious beliefs have no basis in skewing my political beliefs, but if we are going to delve into the subject of sin, are any of us innocent? I realize everything is black and white to God, but this sinful Earth is full of gray areas that we cannot hope to fully understand in this life. We are neither omniscient, nor free from sin.
If we have a moral conflict with the lifestyle choices of our human brethren, that should be addressed private, personal, or social platform, but keep it out of the political arena. The more we keep calling on the government for rules, restrictions, and regulations, the more power we give them to play with our personal freedoms, denying us opportunities of necessity to develop our own social integrity and civic responsibilities.
If your neighbors’ expression of freedom does not pose a threat to the rights of others’ to their own pursuits of life, liberty, and happiness, then leave the government out of it, and enjoy being an American!
